Electionline is America’s only source for politics-free news and information about the people and processes that guide our nation’s elections.
Purpose
Electionline is a project of Democracy Fund, a bipartisan foundation established by eBay founder and philanthropist Pierre Omidyar. One of Democracy Fund’s guiding principles is that Americans should have voter-centric elections, where elections are accessible, fair, and secure.
We aim to make electionline an essential stop for news and information for election administrators, advocates, and journalists—before, during, and after election cycles. We believe the site can help readers navigate a maze of information and point to trustworthy resources and ideas to improve the voting experience for the American people.
Editorial Policy
Electionline is overseen by editor Mindy Moretti and managed by Democracy Fund’s Elections program. The editor of electionline sources, creates, and posts content in collaboration with Democracy Fund. The team is committed to transparency and will disclose the relationship when any content on the site may feature Democracy Fund grantees or other work. In making content choices, we strive to provide and share content that informs and inspires readers, especially those who work within the election administration field. Questions and concerns should be directed to mmoretti@electionline.brinkdev.com
History
Electionline was founded in 2001 by Doug Chapin and supported by a grant to the University of Richmond from The Pew Charitable Trusts. In 2007, the electionline team formally joined The Pew Charitable Trusts as part of Pew’s transition from private foundation to public charity.
In 2011, Doug Chapin ended his tenure at Pew to work with the University of Minnesota and brought the electionline team with him. Pew continued to fund electionline through August 2013 as part of a “project funding agreement” with the University of Minnesota. After a brief hiatus, electionline returned in 2014 with funding from Democracy Fund and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. It was also supported by Democracy Works and ELECTricity now a part of the Center for Technology and Civic Life.
In late 2017, electionline became a project of Democracy Fund with Mindy Moretti, who has managed the site’s day-to-day operations since 2011, serving as the site’s Editor-in-Chief.
